#68668 closed defect (duplicate)

Mirror site ema.uk.*.macports.org does not exist anymore. Please remove from automatic fetch or insure master_site priority

Reported by: develVannessa Owned by: admin@…
Priority: Normal Milestone:
Component: server/hosting Version:

Port:

Description (last modified by ryandesign (Ryan Carsten Schmidt))

Could not resolve host: ema.uk.distfiles.macports.org
host ema.uk.distfiles.macports.org
Host ema.uk.distfiles.macports.org not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

This causes crashes for installing dist. files

Q: why when setting a master_sites in a port file this is NOT the first site used rather the macports automatic list.

MacPorts uses servers in the order of which one is closest to you.

Duplicate of #68576.

Description: modified (diff)

This should not cause any "crashes" when installing ports. When MacPorts cannot download from one site, it tries another.

It cannot just download it cannot find the server itself. besides the UK is not the closest site. closest are erlangen in Germany or Denmark -

MacPorts tries servers in order of ping time from lowest to highest, which is intended to be an approximation of which server is closest to you, or at least which server can be reached the quickest, and from which you should therefore see the fastest download times.

If the hostname does not resolve to an IP address, then MacPorts will not even try to download from it since of course it can't even be pinged to determine its distance.

Conversely, if MacPorts is trying to download from it, then you have a misbehaving DNS server which might be returning answers for nonexistent hosts. For example, it might return the IP address of a server run by your Internet provider, so that it might display a search result page for you instead of a server not found message. This search page server is likely close to you, in network terms, which could explain why it is checked first.
