Notable improvements: compatibility with python 3.12, and thus it is now possible to have py312-virtualenvwrapper.

With python 3.12 being released, this is needed more. 3.12 breaks virtualenvwrapper 4.8.4, and isn't fixed until 6.0
6.1 is the latest release, and I think it supports python versions less than 3.12 too.

I am attaching the ports I had to update to add this to my local port index (had to remove compatibility with python 3.7)
It looks like the changes you have made here are largely complete. Did you want to submit a pull request? Those tend to get seen faster than trac tickets.
