Things have actually become worse, I installed a few ports including kde+all and available upgrades, and nautilus now just crashes indefinitely (as it is automatically restarted)

the problem is not necessarily in nautilus itself, because if I start it from windowmaker, it works well, while only displaying default blank icons. Preferences still crashes.

Ok, nautilus does not crash anymore, maybe because I installed shared-mime-info ?
But Preferences still crash.

have you tried forcibly uninstalling nautilus, running clean --all against it and reinstalling?
I am wondering if it is trying to load a library against a slightly different version than is currently on your system.

Ok, I found the problem is in i18n stuff. If I disable my LANG env, it works well.
Here is what happens:
