Description
This is a first attempt at making a patch to let port upgrade work with direct mode.
I haven't done any testing (at all!) with this patch yet, but am looking for comments.

I've done some testing of this patch now, and it seems to work as expected.
I would like some feedback about modifying it or see it committed (along with 7719 and 7756).
