0.9.8-rc2 is the latest The current ruby API for sphinx is only supported from sphinx version 0.9.8 and up.

0.9.7 is the last stable release at this point in time. 0.9.8rc2 is a release candidate for the next stable release.
If someone would like to maintain a sphinx-devel port, that would be the appropriate place to track those pre-release versions.
