Was there a reason why you chose version 0.8.0 when version 0.9.0 has been out since February? Or should we update the port?

Yes, that's intended: An important application of cuneiform is to work together with hocr2pdf in order to make "sandwich" pdfs. Cuneiform 0.9.0 has a bug due to which it is not working with hocr2pdf (see bug tracker of cuneiform). I suggest to wait until they fix this before makeing the 0.9.0 port.
By the way, did you compile cuneiform on MacOS 10.6? I'm working with 10.5. Everything compiles fine here. But some people reported that they were unable to compile cuneiform under 10.6. They did not use my Portfile though.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. Yes, it installed fine on Snow Leopard.
Thanks, I committed it in r67158 with these changes:
