Isn't wgrib2 outdated? It revision number was incremented on 17 Jan 2011 to solve problem with libpng. Rebuild wgrib2 and try again.

I updated wgrib2. Your build failed when _png_set_longjmp_fn needed in libgrib2c.a was not found. I have
$ port installed wgrib2 libpng The following ports are currently installed: libpng @1.4.7_0+universal (active) wgrib2 @1.9.3a_1+g95 (active)

The 2.0.a9 version does work, sorry I did not report back. We have been using the latest 2.0.1 grads with Lion, so maybe that version can be added into MacPorts, thanks
