Is it possible to have MacPorts install the xcode command line tools by itself during installation?

Is it possible to negotiate with Apple to have MacPorts be able to fetch and install the xcode command line tools by itself without a user having to either use the apple developers site or install the huge Xcode.app manually?

This simply will never happen. Apple provides us with no special treatment, other than hosting; they will not allow us to bypass the Mac Dev Center. (Note that downloading the Command Line Tools always requires logging in, either through Xcode or on the website.)
FYI, these sort of open-ended queries really should go to one of the mailing lists, not Trac. You’d get more discussion there because more devs subscribe to the lists than monitor the bug tracker.

Nope, Trac tickets aren’t sent to macports-users or macports-dev. There is macports-tickets, but it’s kind of high-volume (as you might imagine), and most devs don’t want that firehose filling their inboxes.

MacPorts might be able to trigger the installation of the command line tools (still requiring user interaction) in the future. Let's see how the command line tools setup works in Mavericks.
