Your patch is against an older version of the Portfile. The port currently correctly uses the Macports default python 2.7. If you want a non-standard python version, then python variants should be added.

pyXY-* ports are python modules. For ports that use python, you can use variants as I said in comment:2. See the mesa port, among many others, for an example of a port that uses python and has python variants. So this ticket can be about requesting a python33 variant. I have updated the summary.

It looks like the 1.9.4 version does not support python 2.7 anymore. Should there just be a completely new port for the 1.9.x versions? Not sure what the convention is.

Their website says 1.9.x is unstable - the macports convention would be to have a -devel port
