port install with no target but plenty of variants seems to take a best guess? or defaults to first-off-the-rank.

well i'm a damn idiot.
there was a Portfile there.
that is the *last* stupid thing im doing today. wish me luck tomorrow.

No, it doesn't guess. I can't explain what's happening. Can you do that with -d to give us some more clues? And what about a directory listing of the current directory.
