BUG: Gimp fails opening JPEGs from Sony Cameras

Description
On both an older updated install, and now a fresh DarwinPorts install, Gimp is failing to open JPEG images shot by three different models of Sony camera. It will open JPEGs shot by a Minolta, however.
Further, if I use jhead -de to eliminate the exif information, Gimp opens them fine. Also, earlier versions worked on these same images, and the same images can be opened using Gimp.app without modification.
The "GIMP Message" is useless, as usual: Plug-in could not open image. On the console, all I get is "segmentation fault."
I have heard there were problems with a recent version of libexif, which is why I tried deleting the exif information.
Glad to help with any further info I can supply.

Was this with the gimp or gimp2 port? If gimp2, it's definitely a newer version since this bug, so that may work better.
Hi,
I have the same problem with gimp2 installed today and a 2 MByte jpeg file. Error is
jpeg(3895) malloc: * vm_allocate(size=2684416000) failed (error code=3) jpeg(3895) malloc: * error: can't allocate region jpeg(3895) malloc: * set a breakpoint in szone_error to debug /opt/local/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/jpeg: fatal error: Bus error
Should I attach the file which triggered the error?
Regards Olaf

This problem has been reported by others, but I encouraged them to post their bug on gimp's own bugzilla (bugzilla.gnome.org) because I already saw the same problem with a kodak camera on Mandrake 10 x86.
the dirty fix is to export these jpegs to open them in gimp2
