Trying to install gc44 yields
qqfidom@paco:~ > sudo port install gcc44 ---> Fetching distfiles for gcc44 Error: building gcc44 is not supported with Xcode 9 or greater Error: Failed to fetch gcc44: unsupported platform Error: See /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_macports_release_tarballs_ports_lang_gcc44/gcc44/main.log for details. Error: Follow https://guide.macports.org/#project.tickets to report a bug. Error: Processing of port gcc44 failed
I have followed the instructions with "port clean ..." etc, without success.
I needed to install gcc44 for the OpenModelica port.

Please use WikiFormatting!
Unfortunately, the error says everything: gcc44 is not supported on your version of macOS!
You should check for open tickets for OpenModelica
regarding the compiler.

Openmodelica has it's own repo system appended on to MacPorts, and uses all MacPorts infrastructure.
But gcc44 is not needed for it. If you need gcc, on Mojave you need to use a new gcc version, like 6 or 7 or 8 or newer.
The older versions just don't build on Mojave.
