There appears to be problems with Big Sur on Mac. I was attempting to install dfu-programmer, but even installing gperf as part of that is failing. Here's the dry run as requested:

I ended up having to do this because the pre-built versions require macOS 10 and not higher

MacPorts 2.6.2 isn't compatible with Big Sur beta. Build the latest code from our git repository master instead.
