The native OS X sink was broken on some versions (e.g. worked on 10.6, not on 10.7) because Apple changed the API. The libao sink works on most, if not all, versions. Let the libao developers chase that moving target rather than putting that burden on the developers of each piece of software that needs audio output.

Thank you very much for this information. My grumpy attitude was caused by the message in previous tickets on this subject that coreaudio was broken and abandoned by mpd developers, period. No info was give about any suggested workaround for Mac OSX.
I have installed libao, entered it into the "audio output" section and now all is working flawlessly. Again, thank you for the libao suggestion.
